Donovan shines as a competitive rider

Juls_2 With only three years of horseback riding experience, Amesbury resident Julie Donovan, 34, of Elm Street recently competed in the Equestrian Special Olympics. She advanced out of the North Section Qualifier to the finals at Windrush Farm in Boxford.

It all started with a job placement at Windrush. Donovan, a 1994 graduate of Amesbury High School, is developmentally delayed and nonverbal. She communicates through American Sign Language. She was placed at Windrush five years ago by Work Opportunities Unlimited of the Merrimack Valley, where her mother Diane Donovan is a job coach.

“Julie comes to us five days a week and does barn chores for us,” said Jennifer Tartaglia, development director at Windrush Farm Therapeutic Equitation, Inc. “She loves horses.”
