One of our most recent collaborations is with Kagan Associates and their HorseSense Program. (read earlier post)
HorseSense is based on the relatively new field of Equine Assisted Professional Development (EAPD), an increasingly popular and effective method for enhancing leadership, managerial, and team skills through groundwork, play, and arena exercises with horses.
Today, Michelle and Leslie from Kagan Associates were at Windrush to take a test run with the horses in preparation for their upcoming workshop.
On Tuesday, a group of teenage girls from the DARE Family Services Program participated in a workshop at Windrush Farm. The teens are in the custody of the Department of Social Services, and they come to the DARE program pregnant or with babies.
These young mothers have a strong desire to raise their children themselves and live independently. However, their young age and family history would place their own baby at risk unless they learn the skills to parent effectively.
While at Windrush, the girls groomed and tacked their horses and participated in a riding lesson. Learning to work with horses builds self-confidence and raises self esteem. Horses are non-judgmental and teach empathy and patience. All of these qualities will benefit the girls in their new life as mothers.

Windrush Farm—a scenic mix of fields, forest, and wetlands—is the longtime headquarters of Windrush Farm Therapeutic Equitation, Inc., which each year provides equine-assisted therapies to more than 300 children and adults with disabilities and veterans of war. Founded in 1964 by Marjorie Kittredge, the program is the first of more than 780 programs of its kind supported by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association.
